The rocket is thought to be a powerful intermediate-range missile
North Korea has
claimed that the missile it tested on Sunday was a new type of rocket
capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead.
The missile,
launched at a steep angle, reached an altitude of 2,000km (1,242 miles)
and travelled about 700km, landing in the sea west of Japan.
North Korea said on Monday it was a test of the abilities of a "newly developed ballistic rocket".
South Korea's military said it could not yet verify the North's claims.
But
it said the North's missiles did appear to be able to leave and
re-enter the atmosphere, which is crucial to developing intercontinental
ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the Yonhap news agency reported.

North Korea displayed its missile arsenal in a massive military parade in April
Repeated missile tests by the North this year - not
all of them successful but all a breach of UN sanctions - have sparked
international alarm and raised tensions with the US.
The US and Japan have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday.
Why the trajectory? Analysis by defence expert Melissa Hanham
While
unusual, this sharp trajectory with an extremely high altitude allowed
North Korean scientists to test the range of the missile without
directly flying over any neighbouring countries.
The altitude
would also allow the North to test the atmospheric re-entry vehicle
under the extreme heat, pressure and vibration. The KCNA noted both
facts in its public statement.
This "lofted" trajectory would be
equivalent to over 4,500km if launched at a standard trajectory, putting
US bases in Guam well in range.
It is indeed the longest-range missile North Korea has ever tested (aside from its space launch vehicles). What do we know about North Korea's new missile?
North Korea's KCNA state news agency said the test
of a "newly developed mid/long-range strategic ballistic rocket,
Hwasong-12" had gone to plan.
"The test-fire aimed at verifying
the tactical and technological specifications of the newly developed
ballistic rocket capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear
warhead," it said.
North Korea is known to be developing both nuclear weapons - it
has conducted five nuclear tests - and the missiles capable of
delivering those weapons to their target. Both are in defiance of UN
sanctions.
But it remains unclear whether it has the ability to
make the weapons small enough to be mounted on a rocket, and it has
never tested a long-range ICBM which could reach, for example, the US.
ICBM's
are considered to have a range of about 6,000km, but analysts believe
the missile tested on Sunday would have travelled about 4,000km if it
had been fired at a standard trajectory rather than upwards.
The KCNA report said that, as ever, the test had been overseen by the North's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.
It
said he had told the scientists and technicians involved "not to be
complacent" but to build further "nuclear weapons and methods of
delivery" until the US made "the right choice".
The White House has mooted talks with North Korea under the right conditions, which would include a halt in missile tests.
But
in a statement on Sunday, it said Pyongyang had been "a flagrant menace
for far too long" and that this "latest provocation" should "serve as a
call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions".
The US
ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said on Sunday that until Mr Kim
meets the US conditions, "we're not sitting down with him".
South
Korea's newly elected President Moon Jae-in, who is seeking deeper
engagement with the North, said it was a "reckless provocation" while
China, North Korea's only real ally, is urging restraint.
The Enforcement Directorate has registered a
criminal case against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik and his
organisation Islamic Research Foundation or IRF under money laundering
laws.
Officials said the agency's zonal office here has
registered an FIR, called Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in
ED's parlance, against Mr Naik and others after taking cognisance of a
similar complaint booked by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act against them.
The ED, they said, will
specifically look into the charges of alleged illegal funds laundered by
the accused and the proceeds of crime in its probe.
The
agency has already scanned some banking transaction documents and other
details against Mr Naik and IRF and is soon expected to issue summons
to take the probe forward.
The National Investigation Agency had
last month registered a case against 51-year-old Mr Naik under
anti-terror laws for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups
on grounds of religion and race.
After registering the case
against Mr Naik, IRF and others, NIA along with Mumbai police had
carried out searches at 10 places in the megapolis, including
residential premises of some of the office bearers of the foundation,
which was earlier put on restricted list by the Union Home Ministry for
receiving funds from abroad.
Mr Naik,
who has been staying in Saudi Arabia to evade arrest after his name
surfaced during a probe into the Bangladesh terror strike earlier this
year, has been booked along with unnamed IRF officials under section
153-A of IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of
religion and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) beside
various sections of UAPA.
The
charges, in the FIR registered by the NIA's branch here, were also
slapped under sections 10 (being member of an unlawful organisation), 13
(punishment for being member of illegal organisation) and 18 of UAPA
(punishment for being involved in a conspiracy for committing any terror
act).
IRF came under the scanner of security agencies after one
of the terrorists involved in the Dhaka cafe attack had allegedly posted
on social media that they had been inspired by Mr Naik's speeches.
Some
of the youths from Mumbai suburbs, who had left their home to join ISIS
earlier this year, were also allegedly inspired by the preacher.
Mr
Naik's speeches are banned in the UK, Canada and Malaysia. The Home
Ministry has alleged that the NGO had "dubious" links to Peace TV, an
international Islamic channel, accused of propagating terrorism.
According
to the Home Ministry, Mr Naik, who heads the IRF, had allegedly made
many provocative speeches and engaged in terror propaganda.
Maharashtra
Police has also registered criminal cases against Mr Naik for his
alleged involvement in radicalising Muslim youth and luring them into
terror activities.
Mr Naik was alleged to have transferred IRF's funds received from abroad to Peace TV for making "objectionable" programmes.

Islam never taught terrorism or taught to support any terrorists,
Islam never taught to over rule the rights of women, neither prohibited
girl’s education nor backed any force marriage etc. How many times have
you heard this from any Muslim? May be many times but its sounds not too
impressive when we see the other side of the coin where media portrays
every terrorist is a Muslim.
But story does not end here, but it has got a new start from here
when an Indian medical doctor and a religious researcher became an
orator and cleaned many misconceptions, myths and false propaganda of
people who raise their finger against Islam which is undoubtedly a
peaceful and pure religion, Islam has also reached to the top position
in comparison to any other religion of the world regarding its
followers.
According to Times Online,
this doctor cleaned all those misconceptions about Islam not only among
non-Muslims but also among Muslims because if Islam is blamed for
anything wrong then the reason is the wrong teachings of correct
religion to them.
That is Dr. Zakir Abdul Karim Naik, very well known as Dr. Zakir Naik.
A thin bodied man wearing skull cap and jacket and trouser speaking
confidently about Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism and many other
religions of the world. He is remarkably intelligent and a fast learner
who has learned by heart the important verses of the holy books
according to pages, verses and lines.
